The best apps for pet owners in 2026 — and which job each one does

Written by HeyVetto · Listings and prices checked · HeyVetto is our app

It's 2 a.m. at the emergency clinic and she's on the table. The vet asks what she's allergic to and when the last rabies shot was — and the answer is in a drawer at home, on a sheet you never photographed.

Short version: a pet owner needs apps for four jobs, and no app does all four. The health record — vet papers, medicines, vaccinations, blood tests — is the one you can't rebuild later, so start there: HeyVetto reads the vet's sheet for you and lets two phones tick the same dose, free. Around it, add what your life needs: PetDesk if your clinic uses it, Tractive for a dog that bolts, Rover when you travel.

Search "best apps for pet owners" and you get lists written by one of the apps on them, usually without saying so. So, up front: HeyVetto is ours. This page puts it next to seven apps people meet alongside it — Vet Record, MyPetLogger, PetDesk, 11pets, Great Pet Care, Tractive and Rover — and says plainly what each one is for, what it costs, and where ours falls short.

💡 Did you know?

Of the eight apps we checked on 6 October 2026, only one — HeyVetto — says it reads the vet's sheet into text you can search. None of the other seven says so: they keep a photo, what the clinic sends, or what you type in yourself.

How this was made

We read each app's public website and its App Store listing on 6 October 2026 and wrote down what they claim. We did not buy every premium tier, so a feature a listing doesn't mention is marked not stated, not ❌. Prices are the US App Store's that day unless we say otherwise; they change without notice, so check before you pay. Ratings are the App Store's, not ours. If we've got your app wrong, tell us and we'll fix the line.

The four jobs

Most "best apps" lists rank apps that do different things against each other. A GPS collar and a vaccination log aren't rivals. Sort by job first:

1. Keep the health record
Every vet visit, prescription, vaccination and blood test, from every clinic, in one place you can search — and that comes with you when you move or change vets. This is the one job no other app on the list can rebuild for you later. HeyVetto, Vet Record, MyPetLogger, 11pets and Great Pet Care sit here.
2. Talk to your clinic
Book appointments, request refills, get reminders the clinic sets. Only works if your clinic signed up. PetDesk is the big one in the US and Canada.
3. Find a lost pet
A GPS tracker on the collar and an app that shows where it is. Hardware plus a subscription. Tractive is the best known.
4. Leave the pet with someone
Find, book and pay a sitter or walker. Rover is the largest marketplace. The medical half — which tablet, when — still has to reach the sitter somehow; see what to leave a pet sitter.

📱 Three apps each hold a slice. The record is the only one that holds the whole history — and the one you'd hand a new vet.

The table: the health-record apps

The shaded column is ours. Tractive and Rover do other jobs, so they're below the table, not in it. On a phone, scroll sideways.

HeyVetto — ours, so read this part hardest

Job: the health record. Best for: the owner who's handed paper — printed or handwritten — and won't retype it. Photograph the sheet at the counter: the drug, dose, dates, clinic and lab values come out as text, with the photo kept underneath. A prescription becomes a course with reminders and a day count. Send the other person in the house an invite code and both phones tick the same dose — so "did you give her the tablet?" has an answer. Blood results line up visit by visit, out-of-range values flagged. One tap copies the summary a new vet asks for. Works offline; "Download my data" hands you a ZIP of every record, photo and account detail whenever you like, free. See what it reads.

Where it falls short: it isn't in the App Store or Google Play — it's a web app you install from the browser, which still surprises some people. It's in testing, so it's young: no expense tracking, no photo diary, no clinic booking, no GPS. Handwriting reading can misread a character; it flags the ones it isn't sure of and the original photo is one tap away. English and Ukrainian only.

Price: free while in testing, any number of pets, no account needed to start.

Photograph your first vet sheet — free

Vet Record — a tidy log for a dog or cat

Job: the health record. Best for: one dog or cat, a vaccination tracker with expiry alerts, medication reminders, a daily log of food, walks and mood, and an emergency QR code a stranger can scan. On iOS and Android.

Where it falls short: you type every record in; the listing says nothing about reading documents or lab ranges. PDF export, household sync and more pets are Premium. English only, and the US App Store listing had almost no ratings yet when we checked.

Price: free, then $6.99 a month or $24.99 a year (US App Store, 6 October 2026).

MyPetLogger — private, offline, Apple only

Job: the health record and daily care. Best for: the owner who wants nothing in the cloud. No account, works offline, a timeline per pet covering vet visits, vaccines, meds, allergies and weight, plus walk tracking on Apple Watch, widgets and many languages.

Where it falls short: Apple only, and only on the newest OS (26 and later); Android is "coming soon". No sharing with a partner or sitter — sync is iCloud between your own devices — so it can't answer "did you give her the tablet?". Documents are stored, not read. PDF export is Premium, and the free tier carries ads.

Price: free tier, then $4.99 a month, $39.99 a year or $49.99 once (US App Store, 6 October 2026; the same figures in pounds in the UK).

PetDesk — your clinic's app, if your clinic has it

Job: talking to the clinic. Best for: an owner whose US or Canadian vet uses PetDesk. Then you request appointments any time, get the clinic's reminders, request refills, message the clinic and see the records it shares. Free to owners and very well rated — 4.9 from about half a million ratings.

Where it falls short: it holds what that clinic sends — not the emergency hospital's discharge sheet, the specialist's letter or the doses you give at home. If your vet isn't on it, or you're outside the US and Canada, there's little to use. The two work well together: PetDesk for the clinic, a records app for the history.

Price: free to owners; clinics pay.

11pets — a platform with the clinic on the other end

Job: the health record, plus a network of pet businesses. Best for: an owner whose vet, groomer or sitter is also on 11pets. Medication reminders, appointments, vaccine records, weight and vitals, and sharing chosen data with family or a professional for a set time. Web, iOS and Android.

Where it falls short: it needs the internet and an account; the free tier limits pets; what each in-app purchase buys isn't published. Its 3.3 rating on the US App Store comes with recent reviews about uploads and the latest update. English only.

Price: free; in-app purchases of $1.99 and $17.99 (US App Store, 6 October 2026).

Great Pet Care (formerly Pawprint) — free records, US-focused

Job: the health record. Best for: US owners who need vaccination proof for a groomer or boarding kennel, medication reminders, a weight tracker and product-recall alerts, free. Rated 4.5 from 2,200 ratings.

Where it falls short: the listing says little about how records arrive, and nothing about reading documents, lab ranges or export. US-centric and English only.

Price: free.

Tractive — for the dog that bolts

Job: finding a lost pet. Best for: a dog or cat that slips the lead. A GPS tracker on the collar shows live location, virtual fences warn you when they leave, and dog trackers add activity and sleep. Works in 175+ countries; 4.7 from 46,000 ratings.

Where it falls short: not a health record — no vaccinations, medications or vet history. You buy the tracker and pay a subscription; family sharing is in the Premium plan.

Price: app free; plans from about $108 a year in the US, plus the tracker (Tractive's plans page, October 2026; prices vary by country).

Rover — for when you travel

Job: leaving the pet with someone. Best for: finding and booking sitters, walkers, boarding and daycare, with messages, photo updates and GPS walk reports. US, Canada, UK and Europe; 4.9 from more than 500,000 ratings.

Where it falls short: care instructions are free text. The sitter can read "half a tablet twice a day" but can't tick it, and you can't see from abroad whether it happened. Pair it with a shared record: invite the sitter to the pet in HeyVetto, and every dose they tick shows on your phone.

Price: app free; you pay per booking.

When to open which

An app earns its place on the moments that keep coming back. These are the ones a pet owner meets every week or every year:

Every vet visit
Before you leave the counter, photograph the sheet into HeyVetto. Thirty seconds there saves the phone call to the clinic later.
Every dose, twice a day
Tick it in HeyVetto. The other phone in the house sees it, so nobody gives the tablet twice.
Before a holiday
Rover to find the sitter, then invite the sitter to the pet in HeyVetto so the doses they give show on your phone.
Every walk off the lead
Tractive, so a dog that bolts is a dot on a map.
Refill time
PetDesk, if your clinic is on it — request the refill there, and the new course goes into HeyVetto.

Why we built one of these

It started at the counter. The vet asked a question we should have known the answer to — when was the last rabies shot, what were the liver numbers in the spring. It was all written down, in three places: a drawer at home, the camera roll, a chat thread. None of them was the room.

Every app we tried wanted us to type the drawer in first. We never did, and neither does anyone else. So we built HeyVetto to start from the next sheet you're handed: photograph it, and the dose, the date and the lab values come back as text you can search. The longer story.

So which ones?

  • Everyone: one health record that moves with the pet — HeyVetto, especially if you're given paper or blood results. Free, nothing to install from a store.
  • Your vet uses PetDesk — add PetDesk for booking and refills; keep the history in your record app.
  • Nothing in the cloud, all-Apple household, one person giving the doses — MyPetLogger.
  • Your vet, groomer and sitter are on 11pets — 11pets.
  • A dog that runs — Tractive, on top of whatever keeps the record.
  • Going away — Rover to find the sitter, HeyVetto so the sitter ticks the doses you can see. What to leave a pet sitter.

❓ What people ask before choosing

What is the best app for pet owners?

There isn't one app for everything, so pick by job. For the health record — vet papers, medications, vaccinations, lab results — HeyVetto is the one that reads the vet's sheet into text and lets two phones tick the same dose, free. If your clinic uses PetDesk, add PetDesk for appointments and refills. For a dog that runs off, Tractive with its GPS collar; for booking a sitter, Rover.

Which app is best for keeping a pet's medical records?

HeyVetto, if you are handed paper: it reads a printed or handwritten vet sheet into searchable text, turns a prescription into a course with reminders, and puts lab values against their reference range. Vet Record and MyPetLogger are tidy logs you type into yourself. PetDesk shows only what your clinic sends, and only if your clinic is on PetDesk. For five record apps side by side, see the comparison.

What is the best app to keep pet vaccination records?

Any app that keeps every shot from every clinic in one place and reminds you before the next one is due. In HeyVetto you photograph the vaccination sheet and the vaccine and date come out as text, with a reminder for the next dose. Vet Record has a vaccination tracker with expiry alerts, and Great Pet Care is built around vaccination proof for groomers and boarding kennels in the US. For a new puppy, see the puppy shot schedule.

Is there a free pet health record app?

Yes. HeyVetto is free while in testing, with no limit on pets, and its "Download my data" export — a ZIP of every record and photo — is free too. PetDesk and Great Pet Care are free to owners. Vet Record, MyPetLogger and 11pets have a free tier and charge for more pets, PDF export or family sync.

Can I share my pet's records with a vet or pet sitter?

In HeyVetto, yes: one tap copies the summary a new vet asks for, and an invite code puts a partner or sitter on the same pet, so both phones see and tick the same dose, free. Vet Record syncs a household in its Premium tier, 11pets shares chosen data with family or a professional, and MyPetLogger syncs only between your own devices. Rover carries care instructions as text, not a dose list anyone ticks — see what to leave a pet sitter.

Do I still need a records app if my vet uses PetDesk?

Yes, if your pet ever sees more than one clinic. PetDesk shows what that clinic sends; it does not hold the emergency clinic's discharge sheet, the specialist's letter, the old clinic's history or the doses you give at home. A records app keeps all of it in one place that moves with you when you change vets. The two work well together: PetDesk for booking and refills, a records app for the history.

Do I need a GPS tracker and a records app?

If your dog slips the lead, yes — they do different jobs. Tractive shows where the dog is, but holds no vaccinations, medications or vet history. A records app holds the history, but can't find a lost dog. Tractive needs the tracker plus a subscription; HeyVetto, for the record, is free.

What happens to my data if I stop using the app?

In HeyVetto you take it with you: "Download my data" hands you a ZIP of every record, photo and account detail, free, whenever you like. Vet Record and MyPetLogger put PDF export in Premium, and for PetDesk, 11pets and Great Pet Care the listings don't say. Before you put years of records into any app, check you can export everything on the free tier.

Do pet record apps work without an app store download?

HeyVetto does: it's a web app that runs in any phone's browser, iPhone or Android, and installs to your home screen — it isn't in the App Store or Google Play. It works offline and needs no account to start. 11pets also has a web version; the other apps on this page are downloads from the stores.

How was this page made?

From each app's public website and App Store listing, read on 6 October 2026. Where a listing does not mention a feature, the table says "not stated" rather than guessing. HeyVetto is our app; we say so at the top and list where it falls short.
